Episode 21 "The laws of the lynch mob"

<Storyteller> The cell door closes and Burton and Ryan's faces are masks of anxiety, as you can hear the crowd outside
* Walters looks to you, a look of weariness in his eyes
* William stands next to the cell door.
<Walters> "The mob is getting worse."
<Walters> "If you wish to save your crew, I suggest you do so quickly."
<Brianna> "We have to calm down that mob before they break down the doors!"
<Storyteller> A guard comes down the stairs quickly
<Storyteller> "Ambassador, the crowd is getting bigger."
* Walters turns to IrohnJohn
<William> {Brianna: Just give the men to the mob. Who cares about them?}
<Walters> "I can try to hold them off for twenty four hours, past that I doubt they will listen to me."
<William> "Then we have twenty-four hours to find the real murderers."
* Walters walks up the stairs, he turns "Good luck, Captian."
<Brianna> (You obviously know nothing about me. We are not leaving these two.)
<Remy> "Huh. Mob justice? I think I'm startin' to get a li'l homesick."
<Hans> "Is there a way we can substitute our men for two criminals here?"
<Remy> "Less, if the mob has their way..."
<IronJohn> "Ey...that was the idea I had before."
<Hans> {Remy: Mob justice. Kind of like the mob people you helped rob a bank for?}
<William> {Brianna: Why? What did they ever do for you? Besides, they killed those women, they deserve Obliviation. Like Connor did to the thing that killed you. Bring justice for those women, like your oh-so-noble Connor did for you.}
<Remy> {John, A *real* captian wouldn't pussyfoot around. You gotta take action. Show these pesants who's boss. I thought you were fearsome?}
<Brianna> (They did NOT kill those women.)
<IronJohn> (Ey that I am ye pissant)
<Remy> (Was thinkin' bout a different mob. An' no comments from de peanut gallery, thank you)
<William> "We cannot simply switch two other prisoners. The real culprits must be brought to justice."
<IronJohn> "Do we have any amidst us that knows the art of shaping?"
<Burton> "Captian...don't hand me to those people."
* Remy raises a hand
<IronJohn> "Mr.LeClaire I may have use for you later."
<Remy> "I've been known to Masque, now and then."
<Remy> "Aww, well, I apreciate the sentiment, sir. I'm quite fond of you too."
* IronJohn looks around to make sure that there is on one around the command group
<William> "We have twenty-four hours. If we start now we might have a chance of uncovering the real culprits."
<Storyteller> You can hear the Ambassador speaking to the crowd. They seem to be listening...except for one of them
<Brianna> "I bet that the real killer is the one that started up the mob..."
<IronJohn> "Here is the plan, we will take the next 20 hours to look for the real killer."
* William goes near the balcony, out of sight of the crowd, to listen
* Remy nods to Brianna
<IronJohn> "We leave the last four hours in case we need to pull a switch."
<Remy> "I'm a gambling man, but I don' like the sound of those odds, cher."
<IronJohn> "Is that a plan we can all work with?"
<Hans> {Remy: This shouldn't be as hard as the bank robbery you pulled.}
<Hans> "You bet."
* William stares into the crowd, his hand going to his cross
* William wraps his hand around his crucifix and focuses on someone in the crowd
<Remy> (De ends justified the means. or, they would have....)
<IronJohn> "Mr.LeClaire may I have a word with you for a moment?"
* Remy nods to John
<Remy> "You may indeed, sir."
<IronJohn> "Mr.LeClaire, we are now off the ship, this cohort is under your command. I am stepping back, they are yours to lead. My command is for the ship alone, not for matters such as these."
* William stares into the crowd, his jaw hanging open. His hand slowly releases his crucifix as he stands there dumbfounded
<William> "Start with him."
<Erik> "Perhaps we could go to where the bodies were found."
* William looks into the crowd at a man dressed in a loose fitting black robe.
* Remy subtly looks over at the man in the crowd who does not seem to be listning to the ambassador, trying not to draw attention
<IronJohn> "I will prepare things on the ship, remember...20 hours, we need 4 to pull of the switch if we are going to."
<Storyteller> The man is yelling at the ambassador, he seems to be against the twenty four hour timeframe
<_Hans> "What would you like me to do Remy?"
<Storyteller> he is stirring up the crowd
* Remy nods to John. "We'll be there. Ryan and Burton too."
* Remy steps up to the ambassador's thing, all smiles. "Might I be able to help? I have a training in politics."
* Erik turns to Remy "I believe we should take a lot sooner than the 24 or even 20 hour time limit."
<Storyteller> The crowd is now becoming more adamant
* IronJohn heads back to the ship
* Remy listens to the argument for a bit, analyzing the quality, any flaws in the reasoning, etc, before he makes his case
<William> "Erik, Captain, come with me please."
<William> "I am very interested in that man."
<William> "I wish to know what manner of creature he is, for he does not belong here."
* William walks toward the door
<Remy> "I seen this before...." Remy shouts down, as he walks up the stairs
<Black> "I say they are stalling...waiting until we all forget this has happened. And those two criminals will be released."
* William walks toward an exit that will allow him to go around the crowd to where the man is.
* Remy steps up to the ambassador's thing, all smiles. "Might I be able to help? I have a training in politics."
<Walters> "It couldn't hurt."
* Remy nods
* Remy looks down at the crowd
* William steps outside the building
* _Hans yells at Black. "Did you Obliviate the two women?"
* Black looks at Hans
* William walks nonchalantly, his cloak pulled around him, pretending to just observe, but mostly he is watching the robed man
<Black> "See they are trying to change killers now!"
<Remy> "Look, now. I know you people are upset. After all, a horrible crime has been committed. But ain't no justice gonna be done by lynching de wrong people. I know this scares y'all. It scares me, too. It could happen to any one of us. An' if we don't find out the *real* murderers, then it could happen again. An' again. An' again. All we ask is for 24 hours to investigate. I don' think that's too much. The prisoners aren't going anywhere."
<Black> "Hah! He lies! Why that one right there," he points to Remy, "Is the first mate! Of course he refuses to see their guilt!"
<_Hans> "We have the feeling you are making this worse because you are the killer. Are you willing to be tested to see if you are not guilty?"
<Erik> "But what if you kill the wrong person? And the killer comes back, and kills again?"
<Black> "All lies!"
<Erik> "You will have the blood of innocents on your hands."
* William throws back his cloak and points at the cloaked man.
<William> "WHAT MANNER OF BEING IS IT THAT WALKS THE LANDS OF THE DEAD BUT HAS NO SHADOW?"
<William> "Reveal yourself!"
<Erik> "Are you prepared to deal with the consequences? What if it was your child that was falsely accused? Would you want him...or her...to die?"
<Remy> "That's right. If you wanna get technical, I'm de First Mate. But above that, I'm a person, jus' like all of you. An' I'd refuse to see *any* guilt, till I see some proof. So, what about you, blackie? Why you tryin' to cause a ruckus?"
<Storyteller> The crowd looks
* Brianna blinks
* Remy smirks at the man in the robe
<Remy> "You need to work on your reasoning skills."
<Black> "He lies! Who will you believe? Me or the interlopers!?"
<Remy> "Who are you, anyways? Just some punk with a cape and an attitude. Why should these people listen to you?"
<William> "Any here with the power to see the stregth of Darkness' grip upon another can see it clearly!"
<_Hans> "I think you are afraid that the real truth will come about."
* Remy turns to the ambassador, and whispers. "Were the people killed with weapons? I know my people brought none into town."
* Remy concentrates on the man in the cape, using Castigate.
<Storyteller> The crowd has no gathered around and has stopped shouting
* Remy looks at the Ambassador. "Spectre would have no shadow?"
<William> "Perhaps he's not dead?"
* Remy turns to the Ambassador, and whispers. "Were the people killed with weapons? I know my people brought none into town."
<Storyteller> Walter's shrugs
<Black> "Lies!"
* Remy looks at the man, using the basic "life sight" ability
<William> "I have heard tales of LIVING PEOPLE who can cross the Shroud into the shadowlands, much as we can cross into the Skinlands."
* Remy chuckles. "Who you gonna believe? Me, or Oblivion boy? If ya don't believe me, then use your own ability to precieve life on him..."
* Remy tries to be very persuasive to the crowd as he says this
<Black> "Lies! It is they who are of Oblivion!"
* Black backs up a bit
* William looks at him, trying to see his aura, if he is indeed living
<Remy> "Use your own eyes, then."
* William shifts his senses, focusing to see the extent to which Oblivion has claimed him
<William> "Look at him with your own eye, see the taint of Oblivion upon him!"
<Storyteller> The crowd is now looking the man over. You can hear several gasps
<Storyteller> Murmers of Doppleganger can be heard
* William whips out his broadsword, blazing with holy light
* Remy smiles cockily at the man in the robe
* Erik looks at Black's face, capturing every detail in his notebook
* Black looks at them
* Black smiles and begins to laugh
* William approaches the robed man, sword drawn and ready
<Remy> "You was sayin'?"
<Remy> "I think you'll find your murderer right there."
* William swings
<Storyteller> The crowd disperses as the Blackman circles
<_Hans> "Shall I find out if he is the true killer?"
* Remy looks to Hans
<Remy> "By all means."
* Black howls as the blade cuts into his shoulder
* Erik stays out of the fray, recording every detail in his notebook
<Storyteller> The blade misses him
* Black dances back and runs into the street
* Remy has no weapons
* William charges sword in hand
* Black whirls his hands about and jumps into a Nihil that seemed to come from nowhere. The Nihil closes
* William screams in rage as he swings through empty air
* Walters walks to William
<Walters> "Nicely done,"
* William bows slightly.
<William> "Thank you."
<William> "I just wish he had not gotten away."
<Walters> "I'll write up a recomandation in my report to Stygia."
<Storyteller> Ryan and Burton walk down the stairs, looking happy to be released
<Storyteller> The crowd that had once been ruled by the law of the lynch mob, now seem timid, ashamed, and remorseful
* Remy nods
<Remy> "Welcome back, Ryan, Burton."
<Storyteller> The begin to dissappear into the streets
<Ryan> "Thanks, but I think I've had enough of this city. We are heading back to the ship."
* Remy nods
* William wipes dark plasm from the blade of his sword and sheaths it
<Remy> "Don' blame you."
<Storyteller> Ryan and Burton smile as they head back to the Ulysses
<Remy> "Tell Captian John that the situation's under control."
* Brianna leans against the wall, fanning herself
<Brianna> "I feel so hot...."
* Brianna looks very uncomfortable
* Remy looks at Brianna
<Brianna> "Uuuugghhhh."
* Remy walks over to Bri
<Remy> "You ok?"
* William walks over to Bri
<William> "What's wrong?"
<Brianna> "Aaaah!!! What is happening!!"
* Brianna is looking down at herself in horror
<Brianna> "Aaaahh!!"
* Remy looks at Bri
<Remy> "Brianna, you're ok...nothing's happening."
<Brianna> "No! I'm melting!! Ahhh!!"
* Remy looks to William...
* Brianna suddenly stops screaming and looks up, bewildered
<Erik> "Her Shadow's doing this. William!"
* William puts a comforting arm around her
<William> "It's ok."
* Remy nods
* Brianna gets a faraway look in her eyes
<Remy> "Bri, it's just your Shadow..."
<William> "It could be from the spectre."
* Remy hopes
* Remy nods, and whispers "Crossed my mind, too."
* Brianna blinks
* Brianna looks around at all of you, embarrassed
<Brianna> "I'm sorry.....I, I felt like I was burning up, and I could see myself melting..."
* Remy nods to Brianna, and offers her his hand
<Erik> "I know what it's like to be possessed by the illusions of the Shadow."
<Remy> "Think nothin' of it, cher."
<Brianna> "It wasn't like my visions, I could feel pain this time...and a voice said 'The fires have come.'"
<Brianna> "Does anyone know what this means?"
* Brianna sounds scared
* William keeps his arm around her. "It's ok. Come, I'll take you back to the ship where you can rest."
* Brianna takes Remy's hand
<Erik> "I think it means you need to be Castigated."
<Remy> "I'm sure it's jus' an illusion from your shadow."
* William nods
* Brianna lets William lead her back to the ship
<Brianna> "Who can help me to tame my shadow? I'm afraid of this happening again.."
<Storyteller> The ship is not very far away, and it takes you ten minutes to reach it.
<William> "I will."
<Erik> "You never learn to tame your shadow. You just learn to cope. What do you think I've been going through, paradise?"
* _Hans heads towards the ship glad that this is over.
<Storyteller> The ship looks as if it's ready to go at a moment's notice
<William> {Brianna: "Don't listen to him!! Don't let him hurt me! If I'm hurt I can't help you! Remeber what happened when Connor was hurt! He said he'd protect you, but you died when he couldn't!}
* Erik wanders towards the ship, writing notes in his notepad
<Erik> {William: "Before you pluck the mote out of thine sister's eye, be sure to remove the beam from thine own.}
<Brianna> {Liar! You have done nothing but hurt me and those around me. I will never let you do it again.}
<IronJohn> "Welcome back!"
<IronJohn> "Ok Abe, on to the Dark Kingdom of Jade."
<William> (Silence Dark One. I will not let any of this crew fall to you.)
<IronJohn> "Let's get the hell outta here."
* Remy salutes John
<Remy> "Thanks, captian."
* William takes Brianna to her quarters where she will be relaxed and in familiar surroundings.
<Erik> {William:But my minions have already taken one. Remember Erik's story? It's only a matter of time before he's with us for good. And then the rest of you shall fall...}
* Brianna returns to her cabin and meditates to calm herself
<Storyteller> As the ship lurches out of the dock, you watch as the city of delights dissappear in the horizon
* Remy leans over the railing, and looks out over the tempest
<William> {My strength grows. It is merely a matter of time before I can do you great harm}
<William> "Would you like me to return later or shall we do this now?"
<William> "It is entirely up to you."
<Brianna> After only a few moments of unsuccessful meditation, Brianna returns to the deck of the ship... too wired to concentrate
* Remy taps his fingers on the railing, and checks to see that his gun is properly in it's holdster
* Remy mutters "Probably jus' paranoid."
* Erik copies out the past couple days' adventures in the logs
<Erik> {William: Don't you know? You can never stop me, or my minions. Only slow us down. But it's nice of you to try.}
* Erik wanders to the top deck
<Erik> "Remy..."
<Erik> "Who is?"
<Brianna> "Let's do it now...my shadow grows more and more restless.."
* William removes his crucifix and hold it out for her to grasp
<Brianna> "Umm..I am not christian...will that matter?"
<William> "The Lord extends his blessing to all who wish it."
* Brianna frowns slightly, but decides to let the religious differences pass for the moment. She takes a hold of the crucifix
<Storyteller> The ship continues on it's journey to the Jadian Kingdom.
<Storyteller> The crew bustle about, during the duties
<William> "Do you reject Satan, in all his forms and free of will, as the blessing of our Father, the Lord who art in Heaven?"
<Brianna> "I reject evil, and ask the blessings of good." Brianna reaffirms
<William> "Then accept his blessing and know that he watches you and will protect you."
* William heals Brianna with Moliate
* Brianna clutches at her head
<Brianna> "Ahhhhhh!!"
<Brianna> "It hurts!!!"
* Brianna is clutching at her head in pain
<Storyteller> To be continued
