Edward Stevens, of the Iron Legion

Nature: Scientist
Demeanor: Explorer

A bright young lad, Eddie was never satisfied with "because". He decided early on that it was just a sham, and in fact answered nothing. As such, he devoted his life to finding a real answer to the eternal question of "Why?". To find his answer, he asked myriad folk, starting with his mother, moving on to his schoolyard friends, then to teachers, priests and almost anyone else he got a moment to ask. The answer never came. He checked in a million places. In warzones during the Great War, in churches afterward, in the assorted stacks of musty books at every library in the county, finally settling down as a librarian, deciding that books would have the answer, so he should remain close to them.

Losing his wife and son in a car accident during his early 60s caused him no end to grief, and in so doing, he took the question to the highest authority. He sat in a church for a week, praying. And, once again, the only answer he got was "Because."

Finally, he took up more arcane studies. He began reading everything on magick and the occult he could find, even going so far as to fill up nearly twenty 500 page ledgers with his notes, calling them his "grimoires". Then one day, sitting out on the front porch, he drifted to sleep while reading a particularly dry text, and just..never woke up. Not alive, anyway. Heatstroke.

Now that he's in the Shadowlands, it's only provoking him to become more despairing of ever finding an answer, as even here when he asks why, he gets because. Despite this, his obsession (for that is just what it is), refuses to give up, and drives him onward, to some final, unknowable answer.
